Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
(30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851)

The publication of Frankenstein in 1818 places Mary Shelley as the founder of science fiction. Previous authors were reliant on magic and other supernatural means, Shelley was the first to attempt to place her fantastic element (the making and revival of the monster) firmly in the realm of science.
​
With The Last Man, she also invented the post-apocalyptic story.
